Different materials show different efficiencies and have different costs. Materials for efficient solar cells must have characteristics matched to the spectrum of available light. 
Materials presently used for photovoltaic solar modules could classify into two groups. The first group is silicon, which include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, and the second group is non-silicon copper indium selenide Galium or other materials which made as thin-films layers, organic dyes, and organic polymers that are deposited on supporting substrates.

Monocrystalline Silicon tend to be expensive, and because they do not completely cover a square solar cell module without a substantial waste of refined silicon. Hence most of them have uncovered gaps at the four corners of the cells. made from cast square ingots — large blocks of molten silicon carefully cooled and solidified. Poly-Si cells are less expensive to produce than single crystal silicon cells, but are less efficient. Amorphous has been used as material for calculators for some time. Although they are lower performance than traditional c-Si solar cells, this is not important in calculators, which use very little power. a-Si's ability to be easily deposited during construction more than makes up for any downsides. Flexible CIGS solar cells have the large potential to set down the price of solar system because they are cheaper to produce and this latest breakthrough brings them closer to the highest efficiency levels achieved by crystalline silicon.
